There are certain characters in books, TV and films that I take interest in more than others, I find that I like characters that are not in the spot light more than the main character most of the time. I think it is because you don’t get to know them as well and most of the time they remain a mystery.
I think that is why I love watching TV series, for example, there is a character called ‘Eli’ in the series ’Stargate Universe’.
The series focuses on a number of characters so it does not really have one main focus. Eli spent most of his time playing computer games where he solved a problem within one that no one else could figure out, and the next thing you know his beamed to a spaceship where after certain events takes place his now part of the SG crew as a main people keeping it running. The techniques used which I like is that they don’t focus on one story line at a time, and it keeps jumping from the past to the present, even the future and alternative timelines/universe. If there is a problem or something mysterious happen in the present, either in the same episode for a future one would go back to the past and explain it. And as well as that character I took an interest in quite a few others and it draws you into watching the program.
I think what draws you to the character is mainly the script, it can make or just ruin a good character. I think a good example of this are ‘soap programs’, Where one week everyone can like a character, or feels as if there lives are so similar or have very realistic tragic story lines which people forget that it is all made up. To a week where the character is less convincing and ruins the story or becomes from being the most loved to the most hated character in a seconds.
Everything has to be good to make a real, believable character, a good script, acting and appearance. You could have the best script on the world but If the person can not act it out and get the passion of what there doing to make the character come to life then its not as effective. I think that was the problem that they had with many computer games throughout the years. If you don’t get good rigging and animation on the character it can spoil it, but it is becoming more believable with the technology today where they can use real life acting movements and put it into the game itself.
The appearance of the character also makes a huge difference to how people react to them. If the character had a covered up face, or a helmet on, then people would react with ‘what are they hiding? Who is it under there? What do they look like?’ And feel a bit uncomfortable and scared towards it. Where as people will feel differently to a character who’s face you could see, you can relate more and see what the character is feeling though the their faecal expressions.
Here is an example of what I am on about, Above to the left is a picture of ‘Ironman’ with the helmet on, and on the left is the same but with the helmet off, well lifted up, revealing the man ‘Tony Stark’
